Strategy Consulting
Clear direction, structured thinking, and practical execution.
What This Service Is
Strategy is about making clear decisions on where to focus, what to prioritise, and how to execute.
We help organisations cut through complexity and define strategy that is clear, actionable, and aligned to outcomes.
Our Capability
What We Actually Do
- 01Structure and define business and growth strategy
- 02Support high-impact strategic decisions
- 03Identify and prioritise key initiatives
- 04Translate strategy into execution plans
- 05Challenge assumptions and refine thinking
How We Work
We take a structured, practical approach.
Our focus is not theoretical strategy - it is clarity, decision-making, and execution. We work closely with leadership teams to simplify complexity and ensure strategy is actionable.
Application
Where We Apply It
Growth or Transition
When the business is scaling and needs clearer strategic direction.
New Markets
Entering unfamiliar territory with structured market entry planning.
Repositioning
Redefining direction in response to competitive or internal shifts.
Complexity
Navigating uncertainty with clarity and disciplined decision-making.
Problems Addressed
What This Work Is For
- 01Strategy exists as a set of intentions rather than a small number of decisions the leadership team can act on.
- 02Too many priorities are live at once, so resource and attention are spread thinly across all of them.
- 03The strategic case for a market, product or investment has never been tested against a credible alternative.
- 04Plans are agreed in the boardroom but do not survive contact with operating reality.
Engagement Triggers
When Leaders Get In Touch
A new financial year, planning cycle or board mandate that requires a defensible direction.
A shift in the competitive landscape, regulation or customer behaviour that undermines the current plan.
A change of chief executive, chair or ownership that reopens the question of where the business should focus.
A large commitment, a market entry, an acquisition, a platform investment, that warrants independent challenge.
Typical Workstreams
What The Work Involves
- 01Baseline assessment: where value is created, where it leaks, and what the current plan implicitly assumes.
- 02Market, customer and competitive analysis sufficient to test those assumptions rather than decorate them.
- 03Option development, with each option costed, sequenced and stress-tested against downside cases.
- 04Prioritisation and trade-off sessions with the leadership team to reduce the agenda to what matters.
- 05Translation into an execution plan with owners, milestones and the decisions that must be made along the way.
Deliverables
What You Are Left With
- A written strategy document stating the direction, the reasoning and the assumptions it depends on.
- A prioritised initiative set with owners, sequencing and resourcing implications.
- An options and trade-off analysis, including the options deliberately not taken and why.
- A board-ready decision pack and a management-level execution plan drawn from the same material.
Our Approach
How An Engagement Runs
- 01
Frame the decision
We start by agreeing what is actually being decided, who owns the decision and what evidence would change the answer. Much apparent strategy work is a framing problem.
- 02
Test the assumptions
We examine the beliefs the current plan rests on, about the market, the customer, the cost base and the organisation's own capability, and gather only the evidence needed to confirm or overturn them.
- 03
Build and cost the options
Two or three genuine alternatives are developed to the same standard, so the choice is between real options rather than a preferred plan and a straw man.
- 04
Choose and sequence
We work through the trade-offs with the leadership team until the priorities are few, explicit and sequenced against available capacity.
- 05
Hand over for execution
The strategy is converted into a plan the organisation can run, with clear owners and the review rhythm that keeps it honest.
Around The Table
Who Is Usually Involved
- Chief executive or managing director, as owner of the direction
- Chief financial officer, where the plan carries funding or capital implications
- Board or chair, where independent challenge and approval are required
- Divisional or functional leaders who will have to deliver the resulting plan
Capability
What This Makes Possible
- 01A direction the leadership team can state in a few sentences and defend under questioning.
- 02A shorter list of priorities, with the discarded options recorded so they are not relitigated.
- 03Clear ownership of each initiative and of the decisions still outstanding.
- 04A shared basis for judging progress, rather than competing interpretations of the plan.
Questions
Questions We Are Asked
How is this different from a strategy report we could write ourselves?
- The difference is independence and structure, not authorship. Internal teams know the business better than any adviser; what they rarely have is the space to test their own assumptions or the standing to challenge a favoured option. We provide both, and we expect the resulting strategy to be owned internally.
How long does a strategy engagement usually take?
- Scope drives duration. A focused decision, one market, one investment case, is typically a matter of weeks. A full direction-setting exercise across a group runs longer because it requires evidence gathering and several rounds of challenge with the leadership team. We agree the shape and the end point before we start.
Do you stay involved once the strategy is agreed?
- Often, but only where it adds something. That may be a defined execution role, a lighter cadence of review sessions with the leadership team, or nothing at all. We do not build in continuing involvement by default.
What do you need from us to do this well?
- Access to the leadership team, the underlying financial and commercial data, and a willingness to have assumptions questioned. Where information is incomplete we say so and treat it as an assumption rather than a fact.
Can you work alongside an existing adviser or investor?
- Yes. We are frequently one of several parties around a decision, including investors, lenders and existing advisers, and we are explicit about where our view differs from theirs.
